All our liveswe seem to be trimming, so very hard, the outlinecalled “I.”

What to be called, what place to take, how, at this roaring party,to keep upa respectable presence.

Bound by names, wrapped in expectations, most of the timewe are really a kind of “socialized specimen,”lined up on a fixed track, waiting our turn.

But now and then the worldshows itsmost generous side.

Perhaps it was years ago,in some snow country.I sat in a black stone hot spring, steam rising all around, blurring every edge.

Close by stood dark green pines, branches heavy with snow. Now and then a wind passed, and a little cluster of fine snow fell from a pine tipand kissed my shoulder, light as nothing.

In that moment of faint cold,in a silence of clear black and white, the name, the identity, the anxietyI had always carriedmelted, in that one second, like snow. The world was empty of people, and I —I was only one breathamong all things.

This kind of “disappearing”doesn’t only happen in perfect quiet.Like one midsummer night, crammed with a crowd into the cabin on a company boat trip, the air around us thickwith alcohol and noise.

And when Ipushed open the cabin door and stepped out on deck,I looked up without thinking

and saw the whole river of starspouring down toward meso slowly, and so breathtakingly.Facing that diving starlight, everything turnedinto an immense silence.

All the rulesof this worldsuddenly becameso light, so far, so small.

They hadn’t vanished. It was only that, before a resonance spanning light-years,they suddenly losttheir old gravity.

“The noise around me was still there. But Iwas no longer on that frequency.I was still standing in the crowd. But Iwas no longer here.”

These moments of “forgetting”are a very brief jailbreak. In that small gap they let usrecognize the open wildernessthat has never had a label stuck on it,the original facethat owes no one an explanationand answers to no word at all.

The world keeps turning. And wehave already finishedthis shedding.

“No grand announcement,no noisy farewell.Only, in the moment a name disappears, hearing the sound of falling snow, seeing the shadow behind the starlight.”

我们。

Weare simplyhere.
