← For You, in Verse

On a Small, Insignificant Sweetness

An early-winter evening.Only one light on in the kitchen. The pan, just the right heat. You cut a small pat of butterand watch it in the black cast-iron panvery slowlymelt.

It slides out a translucenttrail, rich with the smell of cream.Tiny bubblesat the edges, ever so faintly, sizzle.

You aren’t thinking about anything tomorrow. You are only, with complete attention, watching this meaninglessbit of physics, until a burst of browned, nutty fragrance, without warning, fills the whole kitchen.

Timesuddenly slows right down, and that quietbecomes memory, frame by frame.

Or a peaceful late night. You lean back on the sofa, reading.A warm ball of fursettles softly onto your legs. From inside its chest comesa purr like a tiny motor, perfectly regular, sending out a strange kind of signal.

And in these very small sensations, that hard, glossy shellcalled “being a grown-up,”pulled tight over your skin all day, suddenlymelts open at one corner.

The truth is,no one needs to be rescued by some grand narrative. These sudden “little sweetnesses” in lifemay have nothing to do with sugar.

Because all you needis to find, in the airtight ordinary, one thin crack, and let in a littlefeeling that seems to be of no use at all.

It produces no value, and so it is especially clear. It promises no future, and so it is exquisitely fine. For that one minuteit simply, completely, delighted you.

So why not, with an easy conscience, taste that little bit of extra sweetness, like draining, under a blazing sun,the last cool, sweet-and-sour sip.

Thenwipe the sweat from your brow, and keep walking, full of life, through this ordinary world.
